Fresh analysis indicates that people who stop using new weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover lost weight far faster than those who stop conventional lifestyle programs.
Findings released in a prominent medical journal points out that while overweight people often shed a large proportion of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the mass returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.
"People buying these treatments must be cognizant of the danger of fast rebound weight gain when the therapy ends," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of recovery means a return to starting weight in about a year and a half.
Comparing Therapies
The analysis, which looked at 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the outcomes of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.
Researchers note that individuals who shed pounds through diet and exercise usually have a less rapid weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—after stopping.
Explaining the Rapid Regain
Nutrition scientists suggest the mechanism of the drugs explains the accelerated regain.
These medications mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.
"Long-term administration of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the system to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and may also reduce sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.
"Stopping of this hormone supplement means hunger is no longer kept in check, making overeating much more probable."
A Chronic Condition?
The NHS suggest the jabs for individuals with obesity-related health risks, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
Many experts say that, considering the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment is often ongoing.
This perspective is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "highlight the long-term character of excess weight," similar to managing diseases like diabetes.
Patient Accounts
Individuals who have discontinued the jabs describe a powerful resurgence of hunger.
"It was like a switch that goes on and you become ravenous," said one woman.
The struggle is exacerbated if patients have not developed sustainable lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.
Significant Interest
Recent estimates show that millions of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with demand being substantial.
- Use is higher among females compared to males.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest level of interest.
- Many obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
In conclusion, experts stress that while the jabs are powerful tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic solution and maintained weight loss hinges on ongoing lifestyle support.
