Cancellieri Shows Glimpses of Brilliance in Bright Spot for Haywire Lazio

The feeling at Lazio's home ground was anything but joyful during the weekend fixture. Lazio were trailing against Torino, a side that had let in 10 goals while netting just two in their most recent five league matches. Supporters from the Curva Nord were wrapping up their ongoing dissent in a long-running conflict with chairman Claudio Lotito.

The Campaign Coming Unstitched?

Was the team's progress falling apart, or had there never been any cohesion holding it together to start with? They reappointed Maurizio Sarri to lead the team in the summer transfer window, but then he publicly stated that the club had not mentioned a ban on new signings they were set to be hit with for accounting issues. Rumours that he could resign were without basis, but he acknowledged that Lotito had "deceived" him.

Lazio were just as chaotic during matches as behind the scenes, overcoming Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but falling short in the rest of their initial five matches, featuring the derby della Capitale. At any given moment, it has been hard to determine if progress is being made or self-destructing.

The Youngster's Unforeseen Comeback

One individual kept smiling amid the chaos. Matteo Cancellieri wasn't originally meant to feature for Lazio this year. He completed last season with Parma on loan and, early this summer, his owning club were attempting to stay there temporarily. The registration embargo forced a rethink. They were unable to weaken their team lacking backup options.

Cancellieri arrived initially during Sarri's previous tenure, then a 20-year-old graduate of Verona's academy. He accumulated 20 Serie A appearances for Lazio in 2022-23, almost all of those coming off the bench. The ex- sporting director, Igli Tare, whose tenure ended at the end of that season, would later accuse Sarri of "telling everyone Cancellieri was destined for stardom then never playing him."

Finding His Natural Fit

It's possible the coach was continuing to attempt to work out the nature of his skill set. Originally described as an attacking winger when he joined, Cancellieri yet was deployed for the majority of that term as an ineffective backup to Ciro Immobile in the striker role. In 63 appearances during spells with Empoli and Parma in the past two years, he scored seven times. Shoehorn
